What is Balayage? Inside Pakistan's Most Requested Color Technique

Walk into any good Karachi salon and listen to what clients ask for. Balayage, a French word meaning to sweep, has become the most requested color service in Pakistan for one simple reason: it flatters dark South Asian hair with a softness that traditional foil highlights cannot match.

Balayage vs highlights: the real difference

Traditional highlights are woven in sections and wrapped in foils, producing a uniform, structured result from root to tip. Balayage is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair in sweeping strokes, so color concentrates toward the ends and melts upward into the natural base. The result grows out gracefully, which is exactly why clients love it: fewer touch-ups, softer regrowth lines.

Why dark hair makes it harder, and better

Most Pakistani clients start from a deep natural base, which means the colorist is managing significant lift. Getting from near-black to a warm caramel without brass is chemistry: understanding melanin, choosing the right lightener, and knowing when to stop. Done well on dark hair, balayage produces the molten, dimensional result that fills Instagram feeds. Done badly, it produces orange.

What a colorist must master first

Balayage is an advanced application of fundamentals. Before the sweeping brushwork, a professional course covers depth and tone, identifying existing color, the chemistry of lighteners and dye families, strand testing and safety. In the Pivot Point color curriculum, students work through highlights and lowlights with weaving, regrowth applications and full-head color before moving to freehand techniques.

The business case for learning it properly

Color services are the highest-margin work in any salon, and balayage sits at the top of the price list. A colorist who can consult honestly, formulate correctly and paint cleanly is the most valuable hire in the industry right now.
